In 2024, purchases abroad of superphosphates increased by 25% to 630 tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 313%. Imports peaked at 678 tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, superphosphate imports amounted to $443K (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 248%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2024 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In 2024, Saudi Arabia (446 tons) constituted the largest supplier of superphosphate to Qatar, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, superphosphate imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Jordan (184 tons), twofold.
From 2015 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume from Saudi Arabia totaled +218.5%.
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($304K) constituted the largest supplier of superphosphates to Qatar, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Jordan ($139K), with a 31% share of total imports.
From 2015 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Saudi Arabia totaled +172.3%.
In 2024, the superphosphate price amounted to $703 per ton (CIF, Qatar), declining by -10.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 66%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $916 per ton in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Jordan ($755 per ton), while the price for Saudi Arabia stood at $682 per ton.
From 2015 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
