In 2024, the amount of registers, account books, order books and receipt books imported into Qatar fell notably to 912 tons, dropping by -18.2% against the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when imports increased by 112% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 1.5K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, register book imports shrank to $3.3M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $5.2M in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.
In 2024, China (457 tons) constituted the largest supplier of register book to Qatar, with a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, register book imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (172 tons), threefold. Malaysia (119 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+38.6% per year) and Malaysia (-1.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($1.8M) constituted the largest supplier of registers, account books, order books and receipt books to Qatar, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($357K), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 7.5% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +1.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+15.6% per year) and Malaysia (-1.7% per year).
In 2024, the register book price stood at $3,611 per ton (CIF, Qatar), surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2014 to 2024, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($21,023 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,064 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+23.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
