In 2024, supplies from abroad of potassic fertilizers decreased by -53.7% to 2.3K tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 111% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 5.5K tons. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potassic fertilizer imports contracted significantly to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 426%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $5.6M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In 2024, Jordan (1.2K tons) constituted the largest supplier of potassic fertilizer to Qatar, accounting for a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, potassic fertilizer imports from Jordan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (484 tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Oman (232 tons), with a 10% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Jordan stood at -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+42.5% per year) and Oman (+8.8% per year).
In value terms, Jordan ($611K) constituted the largest supplier of potassic fertilizers to Qatar, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($283K), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 9.7% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Jordan totaled -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+36.7% per year) and Oman (+12.6% per year).
In 2024, potassium chloride (MOP) (2.1K tons) was the main type of potassic fertilizers supplied to Qatar, with a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, potassium chloride (MOP) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, potassium sulphate (SOP) (135 tons), more than tenfold.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of the volume of potassium chloride (MOP) imports stood at +2.2%.
In value terms, potassium chloride (MOP) ($1.3M) constituted the largest type of potassic fertilizers supplied to Qatar, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by potassium sulphate (SOP) ($115K), with an 8.1% share of total imports.
In 2024, the potassic fertilizer price amounted to $626 per ton (CIF, Qatar), which is down by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the average import price increased by 149%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,011 per ton. From 2023 to 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from India ($717 per ton) and Turkey ($639 per ton), while the price for Jordan ($516 per ton) and Germany ($585 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+34.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
