In 2024, overseas purchases of maize (corn) starch decreased by -1.1% to 2.8K tons, falling for the second year in a row after seven years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 60%. Imports peaked at 2.8K tons in 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to 2024.
In value terms, maize starch imports dropped slightly to $1.5M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 87%. Imports peaked at $1.8M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.
India (1.1K tons), Pakistan (926 tons) and Turkey (451 tons) were the main suppliers of maize starch imports to Qatar, with a combined 87% share of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +91.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($525K), Pakistan ($405K) and Turkey ($167K) appeared to be the largest maize starch suppliers to Qatar, with a combined 72% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +95.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, the maize starch price amounted to $543 per ton (CIF, Qatar), waning by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $716 per ton. From 2018 to 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malta ($2,759 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($370 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
