In 2024, overseas purchases of maize (corn) starch decreased by -1.1% to 2.8K tons, falling for the second year in a row after seven years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 2.8K tons in 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to 2024.
In value terms, maize starch imports reduced modestly to $1.5M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $1.8M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
India (1.1K tons), Pakistan (926 tons) and Turkey (451 tons) were the main suppliers of maize starch imports to Qatar, together comprising 87% of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +91.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($525K), Pakistan ($405K) and Turkey ($167K) appeared to be the largest maize starch suppliers to Qatar, together accounting for 72% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +95.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, the maize starch price stood at $543 per ton (CIF, Qatar), declining by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $716 per ton. From 2018 to 2024, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malta ($2,759 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($370 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
