In 2024, approx. 19K tons of lemons and limes were imported into Qatar; rising by 17% compared with the year before. Overall, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 36%. Imports peaked in 2024 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, lemon and lime imports rose significantly to $14M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2014 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, imports decreased by -13.6% against 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34%. Imports peaked at $17M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
South Africa (6.9K tons), Turkey (5.9K tons) and Vietnam (1.4K tons) were the main suppliers of lemon and lime imports to Qatar, together comprising 87% of total imports.
From 2014 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +68.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lemon and lime suppliers to Qatar were South Africa ($5.3M), Turkey ($3.9M) and Vietnam ($1.2M), with a combined 77% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +54.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2023, the lemon and lime price amounted to $826 per ton (CIF, Qatar), with a decrease of -12.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 9% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,052 per ton. From 2016 to 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($2,777 per ton), while the price for Iran ($396 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+30.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
