For the third consecutive year, Qatar recorded decline in purchases abroad of fresh or chilled whole chickens, which decreased by -14.6% to 30 tons in 2024. Overall, imports recorded a significant contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 4.2K tons. From 2017 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports expanded slightly to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports recorded a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $23M in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In 2024, France (27 tons) was the main supplier of fresh whole chicken to Qatar, with a 93% share of total imports. It was followed by Lebanon (888 kg), with a 3% share of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume from France amounted to +11.4%.
In value terms, France ($1.9M) constituted the largest supplier of fresh or chilled whole chickens to Qatar, comprising 138% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lebanon ($51K), with a 3.7% share of total imports.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from France amounted to +3.5%.
In 2024, the fresh whole chicken price stood at $46,418 per ton (CIF, Qatar), rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 an increase of 128%. The import price peaked in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($68,589 per ton), while the price for Italy ($13,456 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+30.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
