In 2024, purchases abroad of eggplants (aubergines) decreased by -7% to 7.7K tons for the first time since 2021, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 11K tons. From 2017 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, eggplant imports declined notably to $2.7M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $5M. From 2017 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2023, Iran (4.9K tons) constituted the largest eggplant supplier to Qatar, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, eggplant imports from Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Saudi Arabia (2.1K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Jordan (761 tons), with a 9.1% share.
From 2014 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from Iran stood at +106.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-10.8% per year) and Jordan (-5.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest eggplant suppliers to Qatar were Iran ($1.1M), Saudi Arabia ($841K) and India ($640K), with a combined 75% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Iran, with a CAGR of +65.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2023, the eggplant price stood at $410 per ton (CIF, Qatar), remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2014 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, eggplant import price decreased by -42.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $717 per ton. From 2018 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($4,489 per ton), while the price for Iran ($221 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lebanon (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
