Doha, Qatar
Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and the UNRWA have signed a US$ 7 million agreement to provide crucial support for Palestine Refugees in Syria. The agreement represents a continued commitment to humanitarian aid and the improvement of living conditions for Palestine Refugee communities through the Agency’s 2024 Syria Emergency Appeal.
This agreement will aid in the funding of essential services including education, healthcare, and cash assistance for Palestine Refugees affected by the ongoing conflict in Syria. The partnership aims to enhance the resilience and well-being of vulnerable populations, ensuring access to basic needs and services.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini expressed gratitude for the continued support of QFFD, highlighting the critical role of Arab partners in addressing humanitarian crises and the plight of Palestine Refugees. “This contribution comes at a critical time for Palestine Refugees across the Middle East. Continued financial support from partners like QFFD enables UNRWA to provide lifesaving assistance to Palestine Refugees in Syria, who are living in extremely challenging conditions,” he said.
From his side, Acting Director General of QFFD, Mr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Aseeri, emphasized the State of Qatar’s dedication to global humanitarian efforts and the importance of collaborative initiatives. “The state of Qatar plays a pivotal role in providing indispensable support to Palestinian refugees around the world. This pledge of $US 7 million will aid the UNRWA to continue its stance in delivering aid and support to our fraternal Palestinian people,” he said. “The Fund will remain steadfast in advocating for the shared value that everyone has an inalienable right to a self-reliant present and a self-determined future by providing sustainable support to communities and countries in need,” he added.
The collaboration between QFFD and UNRWA has always been fundamental in addressing the immediate and long-term needs of Palestine Refugees. This new agreement will further strengthen joint efforts to provide aid for those affected by the protracted crisis in Syria.
Background Information:
UNRWA is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The United Nations General Assembly established UNRWA in 1949 with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees in the Agency’s area of operations pending a just and lasting solution to their plight.
UNRWA operates in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, The Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 conflict continue to be displaced and in need of support, nearly 75 years on.
UNRWA helps Palestine Refugees achieve their full potential in human development through quality services it provides in education, health care, relief and social services, protection, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.
