In 2024, the amount of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics imported into Qatar skyrocketed to 3.4K tons, increasing by 19% on the previous year’s figure. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Imports peaked at 11K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2024, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic bottle imports soared to $8.5M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $36M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2024, Turkey (1.6K tons) constituted the largest plastic bottle supplier to Qatar, with a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic bottle imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (513 tons), threefold. Saudi Arabia (451 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey stood at +28.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+18.7% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-16.5% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($3M) constituted the largest supplier of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics to Qatar, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($1.5M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 16% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey totaled +26.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+3.0% per year) and India (+18.0% per year).
In 2024, the plastic bottle price amounted to $2,530 per ton (CIF, Qatar), approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 53% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $3,609 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($4,674 per ton), while the price for Bahrain ($1,545 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+33.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
