Doha, Qatar – October 23, 2024

Qatar Charity (QC) has distributed a new batch of cooking gas cylinders to approximately 23,000 refugees on Bhasan Char Island in Bangladesh. The aid, which comes with the support of philanthropists in Qatar, is part of Qatar Charity’s ongoing efforts for the benefit of Rohingya refugees.

This project, implemented in coordination with local government authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aims to improve their living conditions and ensure access to a safe and reliable cooking fuel source. Many refugees previously relied on firewood, which posed safety risks. By supplying cooking gas cylinders, Qatar Charity seeks to promote health and safety within the refugee community.

The beneficiaries appreciated the project. Samiya, a refugee mother of three, expressed her gratitude for the cooking gas cylinder, stating, “Before receiving this assistance, cooking was a struggle. We had to collect firewood, which was not only dangerous but also time-consuming. Now, I can prepare meals quickly and safely for my children.”

Hossain Ahmed, a 39-year-old refugee, shared his perspective on the positive impact of cooking gas, stating, “Having cooking gas allows us to prepare different meals, which brings us joy. This assistance from Qatar Charity means a lot to us; it gives us hope and helps us feel more settled in our new environment.”

Government officials have acknowledged the importance of Qatar Charity’s support in improving the living conditions of the refugees. Md Maksudur Rahman, Assistant Camp in Charge of Bhasanchar Island, stated, “Qatar Charity’s provision of cooking gas cylinders is a crucial initiative that addresses urgent needs. It enhances safety and improves daily life for the refugee population.”

The official further emphasized, “We commend Qatar Charity for its unwavering commitment to supporting these vulnerable communities. Its efforts significantly complement our work in providing humanitarian assistance and fostering resilience among the refugees.”

It is worth mentioning that over the past five years, Qatar Charity’s projects have benefited more than 1.5 million refugees living in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasanchar Island.
