Doha – Qatar, August 20, 2024
In response to the heavy rains and flash floods that have swept through several parts of Sudan, Qatar Charity (QC), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has initiated a humanitarian project aimed at providing essential shelter materials to hundreds of affected families in six shelters in Port Sudan.
This support is part of Qatar Charity’s ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian crisis, with plans to distribute additional shelter materials and tents in collaboration with IOM, aiming to meet the needs of families affected by the floods in these shelters and those of the host communities.
The internally displaced persons (IDPs) expressed their satisfaction with various and timely aid packages provided by Qatar Charity, in cooperation with IOM. Each package included blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets, kitchen utensils, solar-powered lamps, plastic water storage containers, and carrying bags.
Mr. Tariq Mohiuddin, Acting Director of Qatar Charity’s Sudan Office, stated that this project represents a strong start for a sustainable partnership with IOM. He explained that the first phase of the initiative aimed to distribute 550 packages of essential shelter materials to approximately 550 displaced families, in coordination with the Humanitarian Aid Commission in the Red Sea State and the concerned committees. In the second phase, 191 tents will be distributed to the shelters affected by the floods and the distribution will also include the host community in the Sinkat area.
Fayza Ibrahim, an IDP, expressed gratitude to Qatar Charity and IOM for their prompt response in providing essential shelter materials after the recent heavy rains. Mai Al-Noor Yahya Khalil, another IDP from Khartoum, emphasized the importance of this aid, particularly the mosquito nets and blankets, which were critically needed under the harsh conditions.
Al-Noorani Abdel Azim, supervisor of a shelter for IDPs in Port Sudan, thanked Qatar Charity and IOM for their timely efforts in providing shelter needs, which have significantly alleviated the suffering of those affected.
