Qatar Airways has placed an order for 20 additional Boeing 777-9 airliners on day two of the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow. The Qatari flag carrier already had 40 Boeing 777-9 on order, in addition to 34 Boeing 777-8F freighters, of which the airline is the launch customer.
Announced in 2014, the Boeing 777X program was originally scheduled to enter commercial service in 2020, but has been delayed significantly, beyond its revised 2025 entry-to service. The 777X family is Boeing’s largest flagship offering, following the end of the Boeing 747 program, and is currently the largest commercial airliner available.
The Boeing 777-9 will replace Qatar Airways’ Airbus A380 fleet, when deliveries eventually commence.
