DOHA- Major Gulf carrier, Qatar Airways (QR) is planning another new long-haul route and this time it eyes new flights between Doha (DOH) and Bogota (BOG) with one-stop to Caracas (CCS).
The airline plans to operate this service twice weekly using its modern long-haul fleet, comprising Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 777-300ERs. This strategic expansion aligns with growing diplomatic and economic ties between Qatar and Colombia.
The Caracas technical stop addresses a crucial operational challenge. Bogota’s high-altitude location imposes significant payload restrictions on direct flights to Doha.
The lower-altitude Caracas airport enables full-capacity operations without compromising range or payload. This technical stop adds merely five miles to the total journey distance.
Aeronáutica Civil reported on X that,
“Colombia and Qatar are moving forward to make an air route between the two countries a reality! Qatar Airways requested authorization to operate the route: Doha – Bogotá – Caracas (technical stop) – Doha, with two weekly frequencies and on Boeing B777-300ER and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.”
The route’s impressive statistics underscore its significance in Qatar Airways’ network.
The Doha-Bogota segment spans 8,261 miles, while the return journey splits into a 636-mile Bogota-Caracas leg followed by a 7,630-mile stretch to Doha. Qatar Airways’ longest route is to its New Zealand service covering just over 9,000 miles.
Qatar Airways’ South American presence currently centers on twice-daily flights to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The airline’s stake in LATAM Airlines (LA) creates valuable connectivity opportunities throughout Central America and northern South America through Bogota’s hub status.
This development follows Emirates’ recent entry into the Colombian market through its Miami (MIA)-Bogota service launched in June 2024.
However, Qatar Airways’ direct routing bypasses U.S. transit visa requirements, offering passengers a streamlined journey between the Middle East and Colombia.
Emirates Airlines this year inaugurated its first-ever service to Bogota, Colombia, marking a significant expansion of its Americas network. The new route establishes Bogota as Emirates’ fourth South American destination, bringing its total Americas network to 19 destinations.
The maiden flight EK213 received a ceremonial welcome at El Dorado International Airport’s gate A14, featuring traditional Colombian dancers and highlighting the cultural significance of this new connection.
Emirates deploys its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on this daily service, introducing first-class cabin service on the Miami-Bogota route. The aircraft’s three-class configuration provides eight private first-class suites, 42 lie-flat business class seats, and 304 economy class seats.
The airline demonstrated its aircraft’s premium features to government officials, media representatives, and travel industry professionals during a showcase event following the inaugural ceremony.
The daily service operates on a precise schedule: Flight EK213 departs Dubai at 02:15, reaches Miami at 10:05, resumes at 12:05, and lands in Bogota at 14:55. The return flight EK214 leaves Bogota at 17:19, arrives in Miami at 22:15, departs at 00:45 the next day, and reaches Dubai at 23:00 (all times local).
Emirates’ recent codeshare partnership with Avianca expands connectivity options, enabling passengers to access three Colombian cities – Bogota, Medellin, and Cali – via connections from Madrid, Barcelona, or London Heathrow.
The route launch capitalizes on growing UAE-Colombia connections, with Colombians emerging as the largest Latin American community in the UAE and showing rapid growth among expatriate populations.
