Qatar Airways bans pagers, walkie-talkies on Lebanon flights amid security threats – Times of India
Qatar Airways has announced a ban on the transport of pagers and walkie-talkies by passengers departing from Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY). This restriction, applicable to checked luggage, carry-on items, and cargo, will remain in effect until further notice.
The airline’s decision follows a directive from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of Lebanon, as detailed in a recent post on X.The statement emphasized that the prohibition is immediate and comprehensive.
This action is a response to a series of devastating explosions involving pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon, which have resulted in significant casualties. On Wednesday, at least 20 individuals were reported dead, and over 450 were injured due to these incidents, according to Al Jazeera. This tragedy followed a coordinated attack the day before, where 12 lives were lost, and more than 2,800 people were harmed in similar explosions.
In the wake of these events, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have intensified their military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. On Thursday, the IDF announced targeted strikes aimed at degrading the terrorist group’s capabilities and infrastructure. The military’s actions are part of a broader effort to enhance security for northern Israel and facilitate the return of displaced residents.
In a statement on X, the IDF underscored their commitment to addressing Hezbollah’s tactics, which they claim include using civilian structures for military purposes. The IDF’s current operations aim to stabilize the region and restore safety for local communities.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has characterized the situation as entering a “new phase” in the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for a significant shift in the security landscape to allow residents of northern Israel to return home safely.
As the situation develops, emergency responders from the Lebanese Red Cross have been actively involved in aiding the victims of the recent explosions, working tirelessly to provide medical assistance and evacuate the injured.
