Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter discusses win over USC
Hear what Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said after Purdue’s win Friday over USC in Mackey Arena.
Purdue men’s basketball sits in striking distance of two different three-peat opportunities.
The Boilermakers go into the final month of the regular season one up on Michigan and Michigan State in the win column and tied in the loss column. They’re trying to join Purdue’s 1996-98 teams with three consecutive Big Ten championships.
Two of the next three games are road trip against the Wolverines and Spartans. Wins like those would also enhance Purdue’s NCAA tournament resume. They would probably need some help in the form of the right SEC team losing down the stretch, but the Boilermakers cannot be counted out from a third straight No. 1 seed.
How their case stacks up as of Sunday evening:
.A team’s victories are assigned values from Quad 1 to Quad 4, based on the opponent’s NET ranking and the location of the game. Those rankings remain fluid up through Selection Sunday, with teams rising and falling in the NET rankings and potentially moving in and out of quadrants.
NET ranking: 8
Quad 1 record: 7-5
Quad 2 record: 7-0
Quad 3 record: 1-0
Quad 4 record: 4-0

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi (Updated Feb. 7): No. 2 seed in Midwest (Indianapolis) Region vs. 15 UNC Asheville (in Milwaukee). Possible second-round opponents 7 Louisville and 10 Texas.
Feb. 4: 90-81 road victory at Iowa (No. 67 NET) — Led by 22 early in the second half, then held on to avoid what could have been a dent in the resume. The Hawkeyes are no lock to remain in the Quad 1 column, having lost three straight with five of their last eight on the road. They’ll be without Owen Freeman (hand) for all of them.
Feb. 7: 90-72 home victory over USC (70) — A comfortable victory essentially from start to finish. The Trojans would need to do some major damage over their final eight games to turn into a Quad 1 victory. Think of wins like this as fortification as the Boilers try to add another tier to their resume over the final seven games.
Tuesday at No. 22 Michigan (No. 18 NET) — At the start of the season, all three of Purdue’s dual-play Big Ten opponents seemed like strong NCAA tournament contenders. Indiana and Rutgers did not live up to their promise. A sweep of Michigan, though, would rank high on the best parts of the Boiler resume.
Saturday vs. No. 19 Wisconsin (No. 15 NET) — The Big Ten’s preseason media poll pegged the Badgers in a tie for 12th. After a rough three-game stretch in December against Michigan, Marquette and Illinois, they’ve only lost twice in their last 13 games. If that prediction had come true, this might not be a potential Quad 1 conquest.
