After a season-opening, 30-point win over Manhattan, the Maryland men’s basketball team is back on the hardwood Friday night to face local foe Mount St. Mary’s.
Derik Queen was the story to start the season, with everyone from athletic director Damon Evans to former Maryland coach Gary Williams talking about his performance. Queen dropped 22 points and 20 rebounds for the first 20-20 game by a Terp since Joe Smith had one in the 1995 NCAA Tournament.
A couple of Terps guards had strong Maryland debuts as well. Ja’Kobi Gillespie had 16 points, five assists, three rebounds and no turnovers. Rodney Rice had 12 points.
Maryland (1-0) owns an 11-0 advantage over Mount St. Mary’s (1-0) in the all-time series between the schools. The two teams last met on Nov. 7, 2023, last season’s season opener that Maryland won by 15. The Mount opened the season with a 98-62 win over Notre Dame of Maryland, a Division III program, on Monday.

Mount St. Mary’s is ranked No. 263 at KenPom and No. 257 at BartTorvik.com. The Mountaineers were picked to finish 11th in the 13-team MAAC, one spot behind Manhattan. Donny Lind is in his first season as a head coach, taking over for Dan Engelstad, who left for an assistant coach spot at Syracuse after six years at the helm. Lind was a former assistant at Mount St. Mary’s (2013-16), Radford (2016-21) and UNC Greensboro (2021-24).

The Mountaineers had one preseason All-MAAC selection in redshirt junior Dola Adebayo, a third-team pick. Adebayo averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last year and had a team-leading 28 blocks. He scored a career-high-tying 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds in the season-opening win. Mount St. Mary’s lost a couple of players to the transfer portal in Dakota Leffew and De’Shayne Montgomery, both of whom ended up at Georgia.
Dallas Hobbs led the Mountaineers in scoring in the opener with 17 points. Senior forwards Jedy Cordilla and Terrell Ard Jr. each added double-doubles; Cordilla had 14 points and 11 boards and Ard had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Other projected starters for the Mount include sophomore guard Carmelo Pacheco and graduate guard Xavier Lipscomb. Lipscomb formerly played under Lind at Radford, and he played just two games last season due to a broken foot. Pacheco, Javin Ervin and Arlandus Keyes are each transfers from either the JUCO or Division II level.
Mount St. Mary’s is 0-23 all-time against Big Ten competition. Maryland has 16 straight wins over nonconference, unranked opponents.
Friday night’s game, which is exactly a week before a marquee home game against Marquette on Nov. 15, should bring the Terps to 2-0 on the young season. KenPom gives the Terps a 97% chance to win and ESPN Analytics gives them a 97.3% chance. Maryland is 36th nationally at KenPom and 43rd in the ESPN Basketball Power Index. The game will provide another chance for fans to see Queen and Julian Reese play together. Reese scored nine points and took just five shots in 20 minutes in Monday’s opener. Keep an eye on guard Selton Miguel as well, who played against Manhattan but did not score in 15 minutes after being limited with a sprained ankle he suffered Saturday.
