Notre Dame football defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio, set to make first career start vs. Georgia in Sugar Bowl, on making it back from foot surgery
NEW ORLEANS — Notre Dame football had two players listed as questionable for Thursday’s Sugar Bowl against Georgia. Both are now seemingly upgraded to available.
Fourth-year right guard Rocco Spindler, who missed the second half of the first-round win against Indiana with a sprained right ankle, went through his usual warmup routine and seemed to be moving well.
Redshirt freshman Sam Pendleton, who started the first half of the year at left guard, stepped in for Spindler against the Hoosiers.
Redshirt freshman Charles Jagusah, nearly five months removed from right shoulder surgery, took second-team repetitions during individual drills in the open portion of Monday’s walk-through at the Caesars Superdome.
Freshman linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, who injured his right knee early in the Nov. 23 win over Army at Yankee Stadium, also went through pass-rush warmups with the defensive line and edge rushers. He returned to practice after the Indiana game and would be a welcome addition, even if in a limited role.
Notre Dame punter James Rendell on his mother’s grasp of American football
Notre Dame football’s James Rendell, the school’s first Australian punter, is grateful his mother Leonie will be in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl vs. Georgia
“Kyng’s a pro,” Notre Dame linebackers coach Max Bullough said this week. “He’s an 18-year-old kid but he’s a pro. He’s going to take care of what he has to take care of in the classroom. If he’s hurt, he knows his job goes from learning and studying what we’re doing to learning and studying, ‘How do I get my body better?’ He’s a pro and he’s going to do what’s right.”
According to Notre Dame’s pregame injury update, all players listed on the two-deep roster for Thursday’s game are available. Viliamu-Asa has not been listed on the two-deep since Army week.
