The Portland State Vikings will play a home football game at Providence Park in November, marking the first game for the Vikings at the downtown stadium since 2018.
Portland State will play host to the Big Sky-powerhouse Montana Grizzlies for homecoming on Nov. 15 at the venue, which sits about a mile away from the Vikings’ practice field but now is primarily home to the city’s professional soccer teams, the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns.
Although Hillsboro Stadium will remain the full-time home of Portland State football, a new contract between PSU and the Timbers includes the potential for additional future Vikings games at Providence Park.
“PSU is committed to doing what we can to bring vitality to downtown Portland,” Portland State President Ann Cudd said in a statement. “Vikings football has always been an exciting fall pastime and playing in the heart of our city opens up new possibilities for connection.”
Portland State football was a fixture at Providence Park for decades, from 1967 to 2018, though the stadium carried the names Multnomah Stadium, Civic Stadium, PGE Park and Jeld-Wen Field for most of that period. The Vikings played the 2000 and 2010 seasons at Hillsboro Stadium because of renovation projects at the downtown stadium. After beating Northern Colorado at Providence Park on Oct. 13, 2018, PSU finished out the rest of that season at Hillsboro Stadium and has played there since.
“Providence Park holds a significant place in the history of Vikings football, and we are excited to welcome their return for the Montana game,” Timbers CEO Heather Davis said in a statement. “We look forward to seeing the community come together to support Portland State and another big event in downtown Portland.”
Providence Park did host a college football game during the 2022 season, with Oregon State rolling past Montana State that September.
