It’s being touted as the world’s first domed golf course, and if designers have their way, golfers in the Chicagoland area will be playing no matter what the chilly conditions by next year.
Members of the Village of Oswego board are expecting to soon hear finalized plans for Megalodome, which will set about an hour west of downtown Chicago near the booming suburb of Naperville. The original plans were already approved last year, and they feature four 300-by-900-foot domes, enough to house a nine-hole golf course indoors. Also on the planning table is a practice facility as well as a clubhouse and banquet facility.
Developers are hoping the dome will also attract other commercial developments.
According to a story at WSPY radio, investors are still pushing to get the final thumbs up from officials.
Village Administrator Dan DiSanto says there have been conversations between the village and the developers, as they continue to meet with investors.
“They’re itching to go, and they’re excited. I know that they’re talking to investors, and they’re talking to other consultants about some of the commercial properties that they have. If you recall, part of the plan was it showed that there’s gonna be some ability for commercial development to support, and be near, the domes. So I just know that they’re active, they have not gone silent or gone dark. They’re very active, they’re very excited and aggressive. Their plan is to get building this year.”
He says the project remains on Megalodome’s schedule.
“There are other projects where this happens, where they get preliminary approval and then we don’t hear from them. They kind of go dark, and that has not been the case with Magaladome. They have been in contact with us regularly. We’re just waiting on plan submittal right now.”
If the final plan is ultimately approved, developers have an aggressive timeline for the project, and the first of four domes could be completed by the end of the year. Here’s video of the project.
