OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Let’s Move. Let’s Reach one-mile race where everyone is a winner.
“As a result of our Physical Activity Day, and this is our seventh year, they’re more knowledgeable about their health in terms of their eating habits and they’re spending the information to other people,” said organizer Richard Brown, PhD, and executive director of the REACH program.
The 7th annual event coincides with Mayor Jean Stothert’s proclamation naming Sept. 28, 2024, Physical Activity Day.
Attendees like Makayla Skrzynski and her two daughters proved you don’t need to be an avid athlete or even wear gym clothes to get moving.
“They wanted to dress up for the occasion, so they have dresses, on their sparkly crocs on,” said Skrzynski. “We love to get movement. It was a fun activity with the community.”
Even though her daughter took a tumble, she still crossed the finish line. But that’s just that start, said Brown, who’s been in health administration for decades.
“If you walk at least three times a week ‘til you sweat, you have a good chance of living a long life and staying healthy,” he said.
Runners and walkers learned and celebrated how their activity helps prevent health problems such as stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
There were also fun activities and goodies to take home and keep the movement going.
