Last night (Friday, September 20) saw the return of the popular Isle of Wight Bramble Bank cricket match and the tug-of-war competition.

The fixture between Southampton’s Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club saw batters and bowlers take advantage of the low tide.

This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Bramble Cricket Match.

Members of the Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Island Sailing Club (Image: PA/Andrew Matthews) Among those taking part was Robin Knox-Johnston, who, in 1969, became the first person to perform a single-handed non-stop circumnavigation of the globe.

Umpires, scorers, and spectators, some of whom were from a nearby container ship, got a chance to watch the action.

Island Sailing Club commodore and team captain Tim Devlin said: “The Bramble Cricket Match is a wonderful tradition that both clubs look forward to and thoroughly enjoying taking part in.”

The Southampton club came out on top, with the final score coming in as 100-99 – the match winner is always decided ahead of time, with teams taking alternate turns at winning!

Tug of War on Bramble Bank (Image: Sienna Anderson) The low tide also gave an opportunity for a tug-of-war competition, with four teams – Wilsonhalligan, Ocean Sports Tuition, Edgar Evans Port and Edgar Evans Starboard – taking part.

This year, Ocean Sports Tuition won the honours!
