As the month of July comes to a close, the NBA Free Agency cupboard is getting pretty bare. Most teams looking to spend money this summer have already invested. All of the big-name, or even mid-name, free agents have been signed.
But as Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported today, the Phoenix Suns have secured the services of 6’1 point guard Tyus Jones, lately of the Washington Wizards.
Tyus Jones — the market’s top remaining free agent guard — has agreed on a one-year, $3.3 million deal with the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Bradbury of @LiftSportsMNGMT tells ESPN.
Jones averaged 12.0 points and 7.3 assists in 29.3 minutes per game from the Wizards last season, shooting 48.9% from the field and 41.4% from the three-point arc. The 28-year old also played four seasons apiece for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies.
Jones joins a team headlined by future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant, plus perennial NBA All-Stars Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. The Suns’ three-headed monster lacked a true point guard last season. Today’s pick-up will help address the issue.
The Suns finished the 2023-24 season with a 49-33 record, good for 6th place in the NBA’s Western Conference. They were swept in the first round by the Timberwolves in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
