Wyndham Clark hit a seven-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Phoenix Open.
The 2023 US Open champion hit seven birdies in a bogey-free round at TPC Scottsdale.
Fellow Americans Taylor Moore and Lee Hodges are tied for second on six under.
Clark’s performance came after disappointing title defence at Pebble Beach last week, where he finished joint 73rd.
“I haven’t played my best golf the last few weeks, so it’s nice to kind of have a clean round where we did a lot of good things,” said Clark.
“I was really patient and kind of eased my way into the round.”
Six players, including Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard, are two shots behind Clark.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, playing his second event of the year after undergoing surgery having cut his hand on a broken wine glass, is five back after a 69.
Nine players failed to complete their round with play suspended for darkness.
They will finish their rounds when play resumes at 15:15 GMT on Friday.
