The 90th edition of the Phoenix Open begins Thursday, and 132 players will shoot for a first-place prize of $1.65 million from a $9.2 million purse. That includes world No. 1 and 2022, 2023 Phoenix Open champion Scottie Scheffler, who finished 3rd in last year’s event behind playoff winner Nick Taylor, who already won the Sony Open this year despite 75/1 odds to win the event into the final round. The course conditions will be far firmer and faster than last week’s event at softer Pebble Beach and its Poa annua greens. Less emphasis on putting stats with more flat and true putting surfaces at TPC Scottsdale. Scrambling gained stats are more in play this week as players handle the tougher par 4’s and holes No. 11, 14, 5 and 2.

Scheffler’s ridulously low odds to win (less than 3/1) are due to his status in the game, field strength, event results (2 wins, T3, T7 last 4 years) and superior stats profile at TPC Scottsdale.

Some select sportsbooks will offer betting on the outright champion as the “winner without” market, eliminating Scheffler from the outright winner market. Changes To 2025 Phoenix Open

Following last year’s weather issues that caused daily delays on the course with muddy, slippery slopes, bottlenecks and unruly spectators, the PGA Tour and host Thunderbirds announced several changes for the 2025 event as they look to control the environment at “The Peoples Open” while adhering to the Phoenix Open motto – Respect the game. Respect the players. Respect the fans.

From digital ticketing to an added entrance near the 18th hole, the biggest change to address congestion is the expanded size of course walkways to mitigate logjams, especially near the most popular 16th hole and behind No. 18. More accessible viewing areas and expanded concessions will add to better experience for all spectators, as the Thunderbirds continue their enormous charitable impact in the local community through the Phoenix Open.

The Thunderbirds announced a record $17.5 million raised from the 2024 tournament, in spite of the issues last year. That eclipsed the $14.5 million from the previous year, and $10.5 million in 2022. In the 15 years with Waste Management as title sponsor, the Thunderbirds and the WM Phoenix Open have raised an impressive $142 million.
