The National Thoroughbred League’s Philadelphia Stallions, the region’s youngest professional sports team, are ready to make their debut when they host the NTL Philadelphia Cup at Parx Racing in Bensalem over the weekend, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Philadelphia Cup – also being referred to as Oktober-Fast in Philly – will feature five NTL races and a total of $1.2 million in purses.
“We’re bringing what works in every other major spectator sport to the noble sport of thoroughbred racing,” said Randall Lane, editor of Forbes Magazine and a co-founder of the NTL. “That is creating teams with local affinities and local ownership groups that fans can root for.”
The Philadelphia Stallions were among the first six teams to make up the NTL when it launched in 2023. Four more teams have already joined the league this year.
Lane, a part-owner of the Stallions, said that the thoroughbreds set to compete on Saturday will return for future events, which will allow them to develop a following among fans.
“We’re bringing the team concept to horse racing,” he said.
