A major name in golf will miss the start of his season.
Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson announced Monday that he won’t compete in LIV Golf’s season-opening tournament in Saudi Arabia Feb. 6-8 after he suffered what he called a minor shoulder injury in the gym.
The injury is not considered serious and Mickelson said he is planning in LIV’s second event in Adelaide, Australia.
“I’m definitely disappointed that I will miss the season opener, but I look forward to playing in Adelaide,” Mickelson, 54, said on X.
Mickelson, one of the biggest names in LIV and one of its major supporters, is captain of the HyFlyers team, one of 13 in the 54-player league that plays for $25 million purses.
Mickelson will be replaced in the field by reserve player Ollie Schniederjans.
Mickelson had just one top 10 finish in 2024, a tie for sixth in Jeddah.
