Thebestisyettobe, a 4-year-old filly trained by Phil D’Amato tested positive for methamphetamine, a banned substance, after an Aug. 1 work at Los Alamitos.
The violation was posted on the Horsesracing Integrity and Welfare Unit website and reported Wednesday by Thoroughbred Daily News.
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority recently dropped provisional suspensions, so D’Amato has been able to continue training while the case plays out.
TDN reported that D’Amato and attorney Drew Mollica conducted an investigation, determined the source and presented the information to HIWU.
D’Amato has met with his staff monthly to address protocols, Mollica told TDN, and he has installed cameras at his Los Alamitos operation.
Still, D’Amato could receive a 60-day suspension.
“We will continue to work with HIWU regarding this issue, but remain steadfast in our belief Mr. D’Amato bears no fault and should not be sanctioned for what we all know are trace findings of illicit human drugs which have no effect on a racehorse and no trainer would ever administer,” Mollica told TDN.
