District 1-3A Tournament: It’s Lucky No. 7 for the Pace boys golf team.
The Patriots, with a team score of 302 (14-over par), snuck by Chiles from the Tallahassee area (306) to keep their district championship streak alive, and secure a spot in the Region 1-3A tournament next week.
With the district being expanded to include some Tallahassee-area teams, that made the district title a little more special this year. It’s also a different team for Pace, coach Keith Kircharr noted, with a senior-heavy squad this season compared to having just one last year in Braden Duvall.
“Having that big district now, it’s good but I’m glad we got to host this one instead of driving to Tallahassee. Now we have to go all the way to Port Orange (for regionals). … Some of these guys have played that course before,” Kircharr said. “Looking at the (iWanamaker) app, it’s flip-flopping all the time. We made three birdies at the end that helped us.”
Pace junior Adam Penrod, in his first district tournament with the Patriots after not making the final squad his freshman and sophomore seasons, fired an even-par 72 to claim low medalist honors for the tournament. But don’t call it beginner’s luck at the district level, that’s for sure.
“He had a great summer playing in all those First Tee tours,” Kircharr said of Penrod. “Being a junior, I’m lucky to have him next year, too.”
Having home-course advantage helped, Penrod noted, after playing the course the last four days in a row. Plus, he’ll be back to practice for the week leading up to the region tournament.
“My iron shots were really, really on point. I didn’t even putt that well today, to be honest. I was putting my approach shots close,” Penrod said. “It was just fun to go out there and put up a good round to help the team. … I was just hoping for a round in the 70s today to make a mark. To win, it’s really special.”
“If you told me an hour into it, I didn’t think it was an advantage,” Kircharr said of home-course advantage with a little laugh. “They got to wake up in their bed and come out here to their home course. They play it all the time. … I felt like we had that familiarity with the course. It helped us out. We’ll take it.”
Kircharr called the district championship “the first step” to making it to the state championships in November as a team.
“But we’ve got some work to do,” Kircharr said.
Outside of Pace’s team qualifier, Tate’s Ben Robinson and Gulf Breeze’s Clark Norris both carded a six-over par 78 to automatically qualify for the region tournament as the next top two golfers not on Pace or Chiles.
