Toftrees Resort in State College, Pennsylvania, has hired architect Jim Nagle to renovate its golf course, which opened in 1969 with a design by Ed Ault. The course renovation is part of a larger upgrade to the entire resort, which is managed by Shaner Hotel Group.
Nagle originally was brought in to check out a problem with the course’s bunkers, and a comprehensive renovation plan was developed. Design work is to commence immediately, with no date yet targeted for completion.
“It was the property that made this a great opportunity for me – it has great undulation and some really nice features such as a wash running through it that could be opened up,” Nagle said in a media release announcing the project. “The course needs improvement, but it doesn’t need blowing up. … The greens, routing, setting and natural topography lend themselves to creating a dynamic golf course that engages players and challenges them appropriately – something any resort or public facility needs to guarantee return play.”
