The disc golf course at Penfield’s Shadow Pines property was named the most popular course in New York, according to UDisc.
The UDisc app, which is a popular method to find disc golf courses and track statistics on games, recently disclosed a list of the most popular course in each state.
Shadow Pines’ 18-hole course opened in the summer of 2022 and is deemed “moderate” and “challenging,” according to the report. According to UDisc, more than 14,100 rounds of disc golf was recorded on the app in 2024, making it the most popular disc gold course in the Empire state and the 24th most popular disc golf course in the nation.
There is no cost for players to use the disc gold course.
The course sits on 23 acres and was designed and constructed in partnership with the Greater Rochester Disc Golf Club. Holes are interspersed throughout the northern portion of the Shadow Pines property with permanent baskets installed.
According to UDisc, the most popular course in the nation last year was Morley Field in San Diego, California. The course, which charges a fee for use, recorded nearly 44,600 rounds of disc golf on the app.
In 2018, the town purchased the 212-acre Shadow Pines parcel, which included the golf course and the Clark House, for $3.65 million. The property has since been opened for public use. The property is open for what town officials described as “passive recreation” – such as hiking, orienteering, cross-country skiing and bird watching. Aside from the popular disc golf course, the site also regularly hosts cross country running meets.
Last fall, the town added a 20-acre recreational area with pickleball courts, a pavilion and a large playground at the northeast corner of the parcel, near Whalen and Atlantic roads.
The town plans to renovate and revamp the deteriorating Clark House, which is in poor condition due to water damage, rotting foundation and exterior wood, and deteriorating roof and porches. The town’s plan is to turn the deteriorating Clark House, which was built in 1832, into a high-end town lodge.
The $6 million project will include rehabilitating the original 193-year-old portion of the building, razing the rest of the deteriorating building. It will also include constructing a new 5,800-square-foot event space that will ultimately be available to rent for special events.
Minor structural improvements and building repairs to the cart barn adjacent to the Clark House and the addition of exterior public bathrooms are also part of the project, according to town officials.
Construction is expected to begin in the spring and to be completed by fall of 2026.
