Paula Badosa withdrew from Indian Wells on Thursday because of a lower back injury.
Badosa, the world No. 10 who won the tournament in 2021 and ranks it among her favorites, has struggled with the back injury for years. Her pain can act up suddenly and seemingly comes without rhyme or reason.
Badosa’s withdrawal comes one week after she pulled out of the WTA event in Mexico. Making it more frustrating, she was off to one of her best starts in years. In the Australian Open, she made her first-ever Grand Slam semifinals, losing to her close friend Aryna Sabalenka, who comforted her as she cried in a stadium corridor after the match.
Badosa’s career seemed to be at an end a year and a half ago because of the chronic injury. But she surged last year, winning the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., and making the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open and then consecutive semifinals in China.
