Paula Badosa suffered a concerning setback after making an impressive start to the 2025 season.
Badosa reached the Australian Open semi-final for the first time in January, before losing to best friend Aryna Sabalenka.
However, since then the Spaniard has only won four of her seven matches, with Badosa retiring against Daria Saville in Merida.
This has caused concern amongst fans, and now Badosa has provided an update in a statement released on social media.
Despite winning the first set against Saville in comfortable fashion, Badosa started to struggle and was forced to call it quits in the latter part of the second.
With Badosa exiting Merida in a disappointing way, it raised many questions as to how severe this injury might be.
The world number 11 has released a statement on Instagram to confirm that the injury was related to her lower back and that she hoped to return to the matchcourt soon.
“Hey everyone. Thanks so much for all messages and supports,” said Badosa. “I had to pull out of the match in Merida because of lower back pain, but I’m already working on getting better.
“I’ll give it my all to get back on court as soon as possible, with more energy than ever. Big hug, Paula (blue love heart emoji).”
It has not been all bad for the 27-year-old this week, with Badosa’s boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas winning a title in Dubai.
However, this statement may still raise some concern as back injuries have caused Badosa significant problems in recent years.
After missing the latter half of the 2023 season due to a back injury, Badosa struggled to find form and fitness after retiring from three matches in the early stages of 2024.
As a result, she slipped down to as low as world number 140, and Badosa even admitted she considered retirement last year.
“A few months ago I didn’t know if I could play tennis anymore,” Badosa said at the Australian Open. “It was at one point last year that I was pretty close to retiring because I wasn’t seeing myself at the level.
“The back wasn’t responding well. I didn’t find any solutions. But I wanted to keep it a last try, a last chance to finish the year and let’s see how it would go.
“Well, here I am. So I’m really proud of what we went through with all my team and especially how I fought through all that, especially mentally.”
It is unclear what the severity of this latest back injury is, with Badosa having less than a week until Indian Wells gets underway.
