Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have established themselves as two of the best players on the ATP Tour over the past 12 months.
The ATP Tour has been blessed with two new stars, following the recent retirements of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Sinner and Alcaraz have taken their games to new heights over the last year or so, combining for the last five available Major titles.
Most recently, Sinner won the Australian Open title, beating world number two Alexander Zverev in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
Alcaraz won Wimbledon and the French Open in 2024 to take his Grand Slam tally to four, as he continued to impress.
Over recent months it has been the Italian who has looked dominant, however, winning his last 21 matches, a run that extends back to last October.
The idea that Sinner has surpassed Alcaraz has been brought up by some, although one top tennis coach strongly disagrees.
Speaking on Instagram, Naomi Osaka’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou gave his thoughts on whether Sinner is now ‘above’ Alcaraz.
“Jannik Sinner is not above everyone, I don’t think he is above Carlos [Alcaraz],” he said.
“I think when Carlos is at his best there is a real match, and I’m not sure who is going to win, nobody can say who’s going to win.
“All of their matches have been extremely close, extremely uncertain, and Carlos won some big ones against him so I wouldn’t say he is above.
“I think those two players, him and Carlos are above everyone else.”
Sinner lost to Alcaraz at the China Open last October, his most recent ATP Tour defeat.
Mouratoglou went on to explain the key difference in the way Sinner and Alcaraz play tennis that makes one look more ‘dominant’ than the other.
“Carlos is making many more unforced errors than him, he’s playing with much more risk,” he said.
“The quality of [Jannik] Sinner is that he plays at a crazy high pace without missing, and that’s really his asset.
“The asset of Carlos is that he has this incredible power in the racket and also the ability to change rhythm, he goes at a certain pace and then accelerates the pace like crazy.
“Jannik is simply everything at the same pace which is extremely high.
“So it’s different, the fact that Carlos is making more errors maybe makes him look less dominant in the matches against the other players, but he has so much margin, that’s crazy.”
The French coach concluded by saying that any suggestions that Sinner is above Alcaraz are ‘not true’.
“When he faces Jannik, nobody can say who is going to win,” he said.
“Look at the achievements, both won two Grand Slams last year, and Carlos for the moment has one more Grand Slam than Jannik, and is actually younger.
“So I don’t think we can say that Jannik is way above Carlos, that’s not true.”
Mouratoglou noted that Alcaraz can give Sinner a ‘real match’ at his best, but just how true is that?
Since the beginning of 2024, Sinner has an absurd record of 80 wins and six losses, with half of his defeats came against his Spanish rival.
Match | Winner | Loser | Score |
2024 Beijing F | Carlos Alcaraz | Jannik Sinner | 7-6, 4-6, 6-7 |
2024 Canada QF | Andrey Rublev | Jannik Sinner | 3-6, 6-1, 2-6 |
2024 Wimbledon QF | Daniil Medvedev | Jannik Sinner | 7-6, 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 3-6 |
2024 French Open SF | Carlos Alcaraz | Jannik Sinner | 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 |
2024 Monte-Carlo SF | Stefanos Tsitsipas | Jannik Sinner | 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 |
2024 Indian Wells SF | Carlos Alcaraz | Jannik Sinner | 6-1, 3-6, 2-6 |
The 21-year-old proved to be a thorn in the Italian’s side in 2024, turning the head-to-head back in his favor, as he now leads 6-4.
They put on a superb display at Roland Garros last year, battling it out over five sets for a place in the final, with Alcaraz narrowly coming out on top.
The win was Alcaraz’s second at the Grand Slam level against Sinner, as he continued to get the job done on the big stage.
Only time will tell what will happen if the pair face off once more in 2025, but it’ll certainly be worth watching.
Sinner and Alcaraz are next scheduled to play in the same tournament as one another at the Qatar Open, which begins on February 17.
