In light of recent winter weather-related cancellations of live racing days, Parx Racing will offer live racing Thursday with a 12:05 p.m. EST first post.
This collaboration between Parx Racing and the Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association is part of a combined effort to reschedule live racing days that have been lost to adverse weather conditions. Since the beginning of the year, Parx Racing has been forced to cancel four full race cards due to adverse weather conditions.
The goal of Parx Racing and the PTHA is to add additional race days in the coming weeks to assist horsemen who have been impacted by live racing cancellations due to the extreme cold. Days will be added in the future using 10-day weather outlooks to determine the best days to add new race cards. In the interim, Parx Racing will continue to add an extra race, field size permitting, to each day’s card to make up for cancelled days, bringing the number of races in certain days from 10 to 11. Entries for Thursday will be taken Monday.
“Parx Racing is pleased to announce that in conjunction with the PTHA and the Pennsylvania State Racing Commission, we will be adding Thursday, January 30 as an additional race day,” said David Osojnak, Director of Racing Parx . “Our horsemen and women – owners, trainers, jockeys, grooms, and others – are an integral part of live racing at Parx. Adding a day of racing or additional races provides them extra opportunities to run their horses and generate income. We are thankful for their year-round support and we always try to reciprocate in return. Parx Racing also appreciates the efforts of Jeff Matty, the PTHA’s executive director, in working with us to address this issue.”
“I understand the frustrations from all of the horsemen here at Parx due to the weather induced cancellations of race days,” Matty said. “While we cannot control mother nature, and the safety of our equine athletes and jockeys is paramount, we are taking steps to address the issue of lost days. I’m proud we could quickly add this day for the benefit of all. Thank you to Parx, the state racing commission, and all others involved in making the logistics possible for such a quick addition to our schedule.”
