AUGUSTA, Mich. – For the second consecutive week, a Gannon sophomore turned in a dominant performance while helping the GU men’s golf team to a tournament victory.
Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) shot a 5-under-par 67 on Sunday to win the individual title with a two-round total of 9-under-par 135 as Gannon surged from third place to a five-shot victory on Sunday in the Davenport University Panther Invitational. The Golden Knights finished with a 7-under-par 569 after shooting 7-under 281 on Sunday to win against 11 other teams. Second-place Ohio Dominican closed with a 2-under 574 .
The tournament victory was the fourth in a row for Gannon in A Team tournaments.
Last week, sophomore Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) shot a 10-under-par 134 to lead Gannon to 26-shot victory at the Howard “Bud” Elwell Invitational at Whispering Woods Golf Club.
Parrini was tied for the lead going into the day and he pulled away throughout the afternoon against the 70-player field. He had five birdies and 13 pars on the way to his 67 as he won by seven shots. On Sunday, he carded a 1-under 35 on the front nine and a 4-under 32 on the back.
Seppanen also had an outstanding day on Sunday, shooting 4-under 68 and finishing in a second-place tie with a two-day total of 2-under 132. He had six birdies on Sunday while shooting 34-34.
Junior Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) tied for eighth after sinking four birdies on Sunday on his way to an even-par 72. He finished with a 1-over 145. Senior Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) placed 17th after shooting a 74 on Sunday and finishing with a 3-over 147.
Senior Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) shot 3-over 75 on Sunday and closed the event tied for 30th at 9-over 153. Playing as an individual, Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) also tied for 30th with a 153 after shooting 75 on Sunday. Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) carded an even-par 73 to finish in 35th at 154 while playing as an individual.
What’s ahead:
Gannon will now prepare for the PSAC Championships on Oct. 18-19 at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Pa.
