A visibly emotional Andy Murray waved at the Stade Roland-Garros crowd amid chants of “Murray! Murray! Murray!” as he brought the curtain down on a decorated tennis career on Thursday, 1 August at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
Murray ran out of lives at Paris 2024 as his retirement finally arrived with a doubles defeat.
It was the end of the road for the tenacious Scot and men’s doubles partner Dan Evans at this year’s Olympics.
Playing in his last tennis tournament, Murray was looking for a fairytale ending with an unprecedented third medal at the Olympics, but bowed the knee with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to No. 3 seeds Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul of the USA.
The Americans drew first blood, winning the opening four games, breaking the British duo twice and gaining an early foothold on the match.
The British pair finally got the rub of the green in the fifth game but it was too little, too late to save the set. The Americans held onto their serve to take the first set 6-2 for a commanding lead in the contest.
Murray/Evans got the second set off to a better start but were broken in the third and again in the fifth with the momentum swinging firmly into the USA duo’s favour.
Showing their tenacity, the British pair recovered a break in the sixth game but squandered the positive momentum by losing their serve in the next.
With their backs against the wall, Murray and Evans kept fighting until the bitter end, extending the contest with five break points to take the seventh (5-3). They held their serve in the next game before the Americans wrapped up the match to qualify for the semi-finals.
