The Green Bay Packers’ youth movement does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. According to data from nflverse, the Packers lead the NFL in snaps played for rookie contract players through three weeks of the regular season. Mind you, this is with only one full-time starting rookie from the 2024 draft class.
While their 2021 class ranks ninth in the NFL with 582 snaps played, the bulk of the team’s snaps come from their 2022-2023 draft classes, which combine for 2,080 snaps played through Week 3. For perspective, the 1,366 snaps played by their 2022 draft class is the most of any draft class over the past four seasons for any individual team in 2024. Only five teams have played more snaps with their 2023 class than the Packers, who have registered 714 offensive or defensive snaps this season.
Again, these numbers should probably only continue to rise in the future. Former first-round picks Jordan Morgan (injured), Devonte Wyatt and Lukas Van Ness aren’t even starting for the team. Despite taking 11 players in the 2024 draft, the only down-to-down starter out of the group right now is second-round pick Javon Bullard, who is starting at safety opposite of Xavier McKinney. The team is trying to slowly bring on second-round linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, which could lead to him being a true starter by some point this season.
Morgan and running back MarShawn Lloyd’s injuries are working against the Packers’ numbers. Another player who is probably due some playing time eventually is fourth-round safety Evan Williams, who competed with Bullard for the starting job this summer and has been used in a rotational role in the regular season. Don’t be shocked if by the end of the year Williams is featured on Green Bay’s nickel packages, either as a safety (which would allow Bullard to play the slot) or as a nickelback.
The future is bright for the Packers. Hopefully, the team can continue to develop their young talent and backfill even more snaps as some of these rookie contract players end up hitting free agency.
