I shared a story recently on a live stream we were doing about golf bags. I was paired with a couple of golfers and they had thousands and thousands of dollars in equipment, but were using the rattiest of golf bags that was literally leaving strays of threads with each club pull.
Do you judge a book by its cover? We say you shouldn’t but let’s be honest, we all do, depending on where our threshold is, that is the line where judgement takes over. To use an example, one might say “I don’t care what someone else is wearing on the golf course”, yet if they showed up to play and were paired with a guy wearing a banana hammock, they would absolutely pass judgement.
Extreme examples aside, that is the golf bag. The keeper of the goods we cherish, for the game we love. Not a month goes by that here at THP, we do not get a request to discuss a new brand. Sometimes they look good, often times, they do not, but once in a while, there is a spark. Let me introduce you to Pacific Sunday golf bags. New to market, this month actually and their journey is kind of fun, once you see the finished product.
See Pacific Sunday isn’t a group of college friends buying cheap golf balls, slapping a logo on them, and calling them Pro V1 killers on Instagram. Pacific Sunday is a family business, husband and wife that are golf fanatics that spent years working to create the perfect golf bag. Did they do it? Honestly? Not in my opinion, but they created a really good golf bag that we think pretty highly of after some extreme testing.
Before getting to the products, let me take you back to where it started. Husband and wife, on their anniversary, playing golf, conceived an idea for a better golf bag. A waterproof golf bag that brings some fun ideas and design to the market. That wasn’t six months ago. That wasn’t even a year ago. It was closer to four years ago, because there were a lot of iterations to make something worthy of the name.
What does Pacific Sunday Tour mean? The name is kind of a breakdown. Pacific, for the Pacific Northwest, which obviously means waterproof. Sunday for the lightweight style, yet serious golfer, but also minimalist. Tour, which is kind of confusing, because sometimes it’s used in the name, and other times, not, but the idea behind it, is “the best” and sparing no expense.
Is it a niche collection? Yes. I would say by design. Unlike most new brands that are dropping 2-3 options at first, based on the Pacific Sunday Tour website, they have TWELVE options available including a personal favorite, Hockey Night. Our Canadian THPers are going to love a pretty large amount of them including the Team Canada options. If you get a second, check out their website on the Collections Page, here, to see the different options as we can’t show all of them in this article very well.
You are here however because you want to hear about the bag. We received multiple samples to try out and at first pass, the best word to describe it is “impressive”. Two things stood out immediately that I want to jump to before getting into is the “is it waterproof” and how is the quality overall.
The first is pretty cool thing for my inner tech nerd self called the IYK spot. Directly behind the tag on the magnetic pocket, there is an NFC chip that when you put your phone against it, it opens up all of the info about the bag. Pretty cool to show off to friends, like a party trick of sorts.
The second is the leg tension that is adjustable. Nothing worse than floppy legs when walking and this eliminates that with a simple pull of the clip. You can see it with the terrible arrow drawing above in the image.
We will cover storage first, because a bag like this, that is made for the different seasons, screams “good for travel” and to be top notch in that area, it does need to have ample storage, despite being light weight. Larger side pocket holds a very solid amount, fairly typical in size to most stand bags. We loaded it up with rain gear, a valuables pouch and more and did not get that droop you typically see on some older bags. Could be the quality, could be that it is brand new, but it was worth noting.
The other side features the smaller pocket. Easily held a box of balls with room to spare. The front pocket, seems larger or maybe just the right size is the better term. It holds a ton. I know a lot of golfers use that for golf balls and there is plenty of room, easily holding two dozen if one wanted to.
Finally the magnetic pocket is unique. Not something you normally see on a waterproof bag because, well, clamshell designs typically aren’t waterproof. A nice overlapping top that is pictured blow shows off how this was accomplished and it works really well with the strong magnet. This is your valuables pocket, which is lined internally with a softer material. There is another softer lined area on the outside of the long side pocket, which is also a traditional spot for your valuables. That was a lot to say it has plenty of storage.
Outside of the very cool magnetic enclosure with the hidden IYK chip behind the patch, they are all zippered. Waterproof zippered, which isn’t a first, but most of them are not done well. How did they test them? In the rain, but also with a pressure washer at a car wash. How did we test it? Well, we tried to play in the rain, but dammit, it never rained. So instead, I put the bag in the shower. Yes this really happened and yes we sprayed the pockets and side down to see how they held up. We loaded only golf balls in the pocket, because to be honest, I didn’t trust it. I should have. They were bone dry.
Will it offer complete waterproofing? Probably not. You are reliant on rain hoods, user error (not zipping up all the way, etc) and more, but I was surprised. Enough that this intro is taking place and the bag that was sent for testing will get quite a bit of use. It’s impressive all the way around.
Now that we are passed the main features, let’s talk about design. There is something for everybody, including the person that just wants a plain black bag, but one that is high quality and waterproof. I think it is important to mention that with each bag a full collection is offered, which I didn’t think much of, until I saw the full collections laid out. Big fan. While they chose the wrong colors for Hockey Night, we won’t hold that against them, but here is a look at what a collection offers.
The names are great such as Sundae World Cup, Worm Burner, Southpaw, Gambler, etc. With each offering a Collection, but we should note, a number of them are limited editions, such as the Hockey Night.
Wrapping this up, Pacific Sunday Tour golf bags are fun. They are a chance to show off your personality or interests the same way you choose a golf shirt or a headcover (also part of the collections). They have some flash, but not a crazy amount, they are a conversation piece, but more importantly than all of that…They are a really well made golf bag that holds up to the elements. Golfers constantly scream “its all marketing” when talking about products, yet that doesn’t mean it can’t also be true. They market well made and waterproof and delivered on both accounts.
If you haven’t clicked over to their website to see the different options, you are probably wondering what they cost? We were a bit surprised at the lower cost options, based on the quality and uniqueness, but the prices are pretty darn good. Bags cost $266 (USD) and are currently on sale for $230. Entire bundles cost $319 and that includes a waffle towel, three headcover set and fanny pack. Each collection also offers bucket hats, visors and more.
Fun brands that don’t take themselves too seriously, while still producing high quality gear should be cherished, let alone known about. Combine that with husband and wife team and putting together a strong launch of twelve different collections and you have something fairly unique with Pacific Sunday Tour golf bags.
