Xander Schauffele began the year as an Olympic champion with a reputation for disappointing in some of golf’s biggest events. He has a chance to finish 2024 as a two-time major winner and two-time gold medalist.
Schauffele’s dream year has continued with a stellar showing at the 2024 Paris Games, which has him tied with Spain’s Jon Rahm at 14-under par through three rounds. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood is one stroke off the lead at 13-under, while stars Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy remain in contention but in need of a nearly mistake-free final round.
Schauffele showed again just two weeks ago that he has what it takes to thrive when the pressure is at its highest. He surged ahead of the pack at the Open Championship at Royal Troon to seamlessly capture his second major championship of the year.
Rahm, however, has done the same with wins in the two majors Schauffele hasn’t won: the U.S. Open and the Masters. How fitting it is that the Olympic gold medal could come down to two players who, together, complete a grand slam?
Will Schauffele capture a second gold, or will another one of golf’s premier names make a move to the top of the podium?
