The final round of golf at the 2024 Paris Olympics from Le Golf National should bring an interesting finish.
Defending gold medalist and United States star golfer Xander Schauffele enters the fourth and final round of the golfing tournament tied at the top of the leaderboard at 14-under par with Spain’s Jon Rahm. Elsewhere, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler of Team USA sits tied for sixth place at 10-under with Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, South Korea’s Tom Kim, and Belgium’s Thomas Detry. The tournament winner earns a gold medal, while second place gets silver and third place a bronze medal. There is no prize for fourth place.
Because first, second, and third place matter for Olympic medals, a tie could also lead to a potential playoff, determining the overall champion, as well as the silver (second place), and bronze (third place) medalists. There has been just one playoff since golf was reintroduced as a format at the Olympics in 2016. It occurred in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when C.T. Pan emerged from a seven-golfer playoff to claim the bronze.
