TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Ohio’s sports betting market grew in 2024, with gamblers wagering nearly $9 billion dollars in the second year that the industry was legal in the state.
New data from the Ohio Casino Control Commission shows Ohioans wagered $8.88 billion on sports in 2024. It’s an increase from $7.6 billion gambled on sports in the state in 2023.
Legal sports betting went live in Ohio on Jan. 1, 2023.
The money bet on sports in the state in 2024 resulted in $904 million in taxable revenue. That was a slight decline from the $934 million of taxable revenue reported by the OCCC in 2023.
A vast majority of revenue from sports betting was generated from online platforms once again in 2024. About 98% of revenue came from online platforms in Ohio last year, led by FanDuel and DraftKings.
November 2024 saw bettors in Ohio wager more than a billion dollars for just the second month since the legal industry went live. January 2023, the first month the industry was online, was the only other month that the state saw at least a billion dollars wagered in one month.
Sports gaming is taxed at a rate of 20% in Ohio. 98% of taxable revenue goes toward education, while the other 2% goes toward problem gambling efforts.
