Ohio high school girls basketball: 5 Greater Canton teams primed for OHSAA tournament run

Can Stark County-area girls high school basketball teams make a deep run in the OHSAA tournament?

Of course they can. In fact, the new seven-division format opens the more teams to make a run. Many Division I and II teams will only have two win to advance to regionals.

Here are five areas primed to make a tournament run.

Carrollton

Despite having five losses going into the tournament draw, Carrollton is the No. 1 seed in the Division IV East district.

The Warriors will host No. 15 Byesville Meadowbrook in the opening round. They could face Eastern Buckeye Conference rival Minerva in the next round if the No. 10 Lions beat No. 11 Lisbon Beaver.

Green

As the No. 1 seed in Division II’s Northeast district, the Federal League champions are in a great spot to reach the regional tournament.

The Bulldogs host 30th-seeded Cleveland John Adams in a district semifinal and would face No. 19 Shaker Heights or No. 22 Eastlake North in the final.

Green went unbeaten in the Federal League this season.

Jackson

There’s rarely a time when Jackson is not a threat to go deep in the postseason.

At No. 4, the Polar Bears are the area’s highest seeded Division I team in a tournament where only two wins are required to become district champions. A victory over No. 11 Lorain would send head coach Michael Coon’s team to the final against No. 7 Berea-Midpark or No. 10 McKinley.

Massillon

It has been awhile since Massillon advanced beyond the district round. Head coach Joe Pierce’s team hopes to end the drought this year.

The Tigers are seeded seventh in Division II. If they beat No. 29 in their opener, all they would need is a victory over No. 11 Cleveland Heights or No. 18 North Ridgeville to win a district title.

Northwest

Two years after playing for a state championship, Northwest has the look of a team that can go deep in the postseason again.

Head coach Kevin Lower’s team is seeded fourth and will be massive favorites against Akron East in its Division IV sectional final. If their are no upsets along the way, the PAC-7 champions would face No. 11 Field and No. 7 Streetsboro in the district round.
