As the boys high school basketball regular season nears an end, the Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic returns to the Canton Memorial Civic Arena.
The tripleheader will feature five teams from the Greater Akron/Canton area and is highlighted by Canton native and former CVCA star Darryn Peterson returning to Ohio to play his final high school game.
Follow along here for in-game highlights, updates and analysis of all three games:
Reese Zerger’s bucket with 6:24 left in the second quarter was the 6-foot-6 senior’s 1,000 career point. It brought the game to 27-18 Falcons. Zerger has 14 points already.
The Falcons lead 25-12 after one and shot 10-of-17 and were led by Dylan Zeigler (10 points) and TJ Crumble (8 points). GlenOak is led by Reese Zerger who scored nine points in eight minutes.
The Falcons scored the first seven points and have a 14-4 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter. The reigning state champions have turned the eagles over four times. Lutheran East is shooting 5-of-10 and have five scorers in the books already.
The games begin with GlenOak and Lutheran East tipping at 5 p.m. Federal League champion Jackson vs. City Series king Buchtel is next with a 6:45 p.m. tip. Prolific Prep, Calif. closes things out against St. Vincent-St. Mary at 8:30 p.m.
The 6-foot-5 phenom is the No. 1 ranked guard in the nation from the Class of 2025 and the No. 2 ranked player regardless of position.
He spent two seasons with Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, a year at Hunting Prep, WV, and is currently with Prolific Prep.
He is averaging 33 points, 6.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.2 blocks this season and will head to Kansas in the fall.
Teammate Niko Bundalo, who previously played for Green High School and Western Reserve Academy, will make the trip as well. Bundalo has signed with the Washington Huskies.
It’s basically a who’s who of the next generation of greats. There have 139 NBA Players to play in the Classic since 2000. That list includes LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Anthony Davis.
Student tickets are $18 online and $20 at the door for the tripleheader. All other tickets are $23 and $30. There are $73 courtside tickets as well that can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com.
We’ve told you quite a bit about Prolific Prep (24-5), but STVM is no slouch. The Fighting Irish beat Peterson when he played for CVCA two years ago in the same building. STVM (10-11) comes in ranked No. 16 in the state in Division III and is led by John Whorton and DeCarlo Prince.
The opener looks solid as well as GlenOak (10-11) and Lutheran East (16-4) square off. Reese Zerger (14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds) paces the Eagles. The Falcons have won a state title in three of the last four seasons and have a plethora scorers in T.J. Crumble (26. 3 points, 13.4 rebounds), Dylan Zeigler (14.4 points) and Chris Hill (10.5).
Stevie Diamond is the lone remaining starter from the 2023 state championship team for Buchtel (15-6). Chris Powell and Isaiah McCray lead Buchtel in scoring. Jackson has a dangerous trio in Mitch Finefrock (16.4 points), Kyle Monterrubio (15.4 points) and Cam Weekley (12.3).
