For many golf fans, the PGA Tour’s annual trip to Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open is the unofficial start of the new season. A strong field, beautiful views and a storied track are all ingredients for a fun week.
This year’s field in San Diego is a bit weaker than normal thanks to the Genesis Invitational reportedly moving from Riviera Country Club to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles area. Why play the same course twice when the Genesis is a signature event? It’s a bummer, but understandable.
However, there are still a handful of stars slated to tee off Wednesday — the NFL’s conference championship Sunday pushes the Farmers’ start a day earlier in the week — including Ludvig Aberg, Hideki Matsuyama, Tony Finua, Max Homa, Jason Day and Will Zalatoris.
Saturday’s winner will earn $1.674 million of the $9.3 million purse and 500 FedEx Cup points. Torrey Pines’ North and South courses will be used for the first two rounds before the final two days are contested on the South.
Now, with all that out of the way, let’s talk picks.

Will Zalatoris
Odds: 22/1
Analysis: Willy Z, welcome back to the card. Man, it feels good.
Zalatoris has started his year with two pretty good showings, a tie for 26th at The Sentry and a T-12 finish at last week’s American Express. Torrey Pines is a golf course that fits Zalatoris’ game perfectly, and that shows with his past finishes. He tied for seventh in 2021, lost in a playoff in 2022 and tied for 13th last year.
Jason Day
Odds: 25/1
Analysis: After opening the season with a T-40 finish at The Sentry, Day tied for third at the AmEx last week. He now heads to a golf course in Torrey Pines that he has loved over the years. He’s a two-time winner (2015, 2018) and has finished T-7 (2023) and T-3 (2022) in recent seasons.
Stephan Jaeger
Odds: 60/1
Analysis: At this number, Jaeger is an auto-bet for me. He’s fresh off a T-3 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii and tied for third at last year’s Farmers Insurance Open. His distance off the tee is a real advantage around Torrey Pines. If he can find the short grass at a decent clip, he’ll have enough opportunities to hang in contention. A top-20 finish at +230 is a bet I love.
