STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A man was arrested after allegedly firing a gun in broad daylight in the parking lot of a shopping plaza in Eltingville, according to the NYPD.
Witnesses told police that the suspect aimed the firearm at a 14-year-old boy, a source with knowledge of the investigation told the Advance/SILive.com.
Officers in the 122nd Precinct responded to “an emergency call of shots fired in Greenridge Plaza,” according to a post by Patrol Borough Staten Island on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Officers were summoned to the location at Richmond Avenue and Arthur Kill Road at about 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, a spokesman for the NYPD said.
A 23-year-old man was taken into custody without further incident and a handgun was recovered, according to the police spokesman.
No injuries or property damage were reported to the NYPD, police said.
“Numerous units responded,” said the NYPD post on X. “Without any injuries to the public or officers, an arrest was made and a firearm was recovered.”
Some of the stores are closed or have limited hours on Sundays.
Workers at the mall were shocked on Monday to hear that a gun was fired in the parking lot.
“Shot a gun? That’s crazy,” said Fadi, who was not working at his job at T-Mobile when the incident occurred.
However, Fadi described the lot as “very congested” and said he sometimes sees people “fighting for parking spots.”
Occasionally, he notices “loud” children running around, but the incident was the first he has heard of gunshots or any other major crime at the mall.
Ann, who is employed at Richmond Wines and Liquors but wasn’t working when the shots were fired, believes the mall overall is safe.
“I’ve been working here for five years and we’ve never really had any big issues here,” Ann said.
She said a security guard usually patrols the lot, and “that makes you feel a little safer.”
This is a developing story and more information will be posted when it becomes available.
