Mavs guard Klay Thompson is coming off a 0-4 shooting night from downtown, and my Nuggets vs. Mavericks predictions expect Thompson to come roaring back today. Read on as I explain my NBA picks for Sunday, January 12.

My analysis
The Dallas Mavericks won’t have Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving this afternoon when they host the Denver Nuggets. The two are responsible for over 50% of the team’s scoring, and they’ll need someone to step up today and knock down some shots. That someone is Klay Thompson.

The future Hall of Famer drains 38% of his eight attempts from long range per night. He’s landed nearly three triples per game across his past five, and I like his chances of knocking down 4+ against the Nuggets.

Thompson is coming off a 0-4 home stinker from downtown against the Trail Blazers. Denver doesn’t defend the arc well (35%), and Thompson — coming off a lousy night — won’t improve the Nuggets’ percentages.

He’s knocked down 4+ triples in two of his last five and is averaging nearly three made threes per night at home. The Mavericks will need buckets from Thompson and I expect him to deliver.

Quinton Grimes Over 14.5 points

I like Thompson to score big, and knocking down four triples should take him past his scoring line of 14.5. He’s cleared that number in three of his last five and since he can’t score all the buckets, I like Quintin Grimes to knock down a pair of threes.

Grimes has dropped 2+ triples in three of his last five. He’s a 40% shooter from downtown and has made 2+ in three of his last five at American Airlines Center.
