Novak Djokovic will not care about any tournaments in 2025 other than Wimbledon and the Australian Open. The tennis icon is hoping to overcome a difficult 2024, which was disrupted by injuries and a dip in form.
Djokovic surprisingly appointed Andy Murray as his coach for the new year. He hopes that Murray’s experience at the top level will help him add to his record 24 Grand Slam titles.
However, former player Andrea Petkovic believes the Serb will not care about winning any titles other than Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Djokovic will bid to win an 11th title in Melbourne at the start of next month. Pereira wants the 37-year-old to retire on the spot if he triumphs again.
“So, my prediction for Novak is that he will not give a flying F about any of the tournaments except for the Australian Open and Wimbledon,” Petkovic told the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.
“And he will make a huge push with everything he has still got left in that cute 40-year-old body of his. Will put everything into winning one of these, try and get to 25, and then get the f*** out.
“Obviously we know [the Australian Open] is the tournament he plays his best tennis at.
“He’s won that 10 times, which is outrageous! The fact that he’s won 10 Australian Open’s is just mind boggling. The only person you can talk about in the same category is Rafa [Nadal] winning 14 French Opens.
“I’m not kidding you, if he (Djokovic) wins the Australian Open, I would like him to drop the mic (by retiring).”
Wimbledon was one of the few tournaments in which Djokovic shone last year. He reached the final but was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz for the second consecutive year. Djokovic had taken an injury he suffered at the French Open into the tournament in SW19.
Olympic gold proved to be the highlight of Djokovic’s year. He earned revenge over Alcaraz in Paris and proclaimed that it was the biggest victory of his career.
How Djokovic overcomes tennis’ rising stars in 2025 will be his biggest challenge yet. Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner shared two Grand Slams apiece last year and looked primed to taste further glory over the next 12 months.
