Novak Djokovic assessed whether his Grand Slam record can be broken by any of the younger players on tour.
2023 was a historic year on the tennis circuit as the Serbian surpassed Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam record of 22 majors after winning that year’s French Open.
He pushed the tally to 24 after winning the 2023 US Open and drew level with Margaret Court’s haul in the process.
As the 37-year-old tries to push his Grand Slam collection to 25 or more in 2025, it remains to be seen if any of the younger generation could get anywhere close to his staggering number, such as Carlos Alcaraz.
The record for the most number of Grand Slams is the most coveted honour in professional tennis. Novak Djokovic spent a large portion of his career competing with Nadal and Roger Federer for this honour.
He now has the record and it would take a monumental effort from another player to surpass his tally. But Djokovic thinks that could be Alcaraz, who has had some epic battles in recent times, already has four majors to his name at just 21 years of the age.
“It’s too early. But, you know, people say my records will never be broken. I doubt that. I mean, Carlos could already be the next guy. Even Jannik,” Djokovic told GQ.
“If they take care of the body, if they do things in a proper way, focus on longevity, focus on the long-term, then they can do it.
Carlos has done something no one has done in history for such a young age. So the odds are with him. He is going to complete his [career] Slam very soon.”
Though he has a long way to go, Alcaraz has aspirations of breaking Djokovic’s Grand Slam record. “Yes, of course. I am an ambitious guy” he told BBC Sport in May 2024.
“I know it is almost impossible to break Novak’s records but I’m playing tennis for myself, for joy and I want to do great things. I want to be part of tennis history.”
During his interview with GQ, Djokovic acknowledged Alcaraz’s target and admired that the Spaniard is aiming high and wants the best for himself and his tennis career.
“He’s even said it himself, he wants to make history. He wants to be ‘the best in history,’’ Djokovic added.
“I respect that kind of mentality of ‘Hey, I think I got the goods.’ But maybe it’s a little bit early for him to think about history.”
