Novak Djokovic has announced he will not compete at the ATP Finals in Turin due to an “ongoing injury.”
The defending champion and 24-time Grand Slam winner has not played on the ATP Tour since losing to Jannik Sinner in the final of the Shanghai Masters last month, though he was fit to take part in the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia.
Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz had also secured their places, but Djokovic’s withdrawal means the line-up is now complete with Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev joining them in Italy.
Djokovic would have been going for an eighth ATP Finals title, having won his first in 2008.
“I was really looking forward to being there, but due to ongoing injury I won’t be playing next week,” Djokovic posted in a Story on Instagram.
“Apologies to those who were planning to see me. Wishing all the players a great tournament. See you soon!”
Djokovic will now focus on trying to win a 11th Australian Open title in Melbourne this January, where he is due to start the season as the only one of the so-called ‘big four’ still active.
Rafael Nadal is set to retire this month at the Davis Cup Finals, joining Roger Federer and Andy Murray in ending their careers.
The 37-year-old has struggled with injury throughout the season. He was forced to withdraw from the French Open due to a knee injury but recovered from surgery on a torn miniscus in time for Wimbledon a month later.
